We're possibly relocating to the Austin,TX area. We looked at some property in the area last week, but most of them prohibited chickens (farm animals) on the property. We do not want large acreage (2ac. max) as we would like to still have a "neighborhood" feel. Most developments that we could find have strict HOA's. I was surprised that it seemed so difficult to have chickens in Texas. We have seven girls that we want to make the move with us. We would like to be 45 minutes from downtown Austin at the most. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd like to know this too, because I want to move to austin in about 3 years when I finish school and I had heard that Austin is very lenient with such matters because sustainable living is so popular.
Although, our goal is to live in an earth sheltered home near bastrop, and I'm sure that area is more rural and backyard chicken friendly.

This is a few months late but I thought I'd answer anyway.

I'm in Austin and have chickens. Austin City Ordinance does allow chicken keeping but HOAs can override them. Also, there are smaller towns outside of Austin like Round Rock, Cedar Park etc. that may have different ordinances so you'd have to check them.

This is a good resource page: http://austincooptour.org/resources
