Chicken questions

They can drop their eggs when afraid, when they aren't in the mood to lay in the box, and when they are new layers they can do this occasionally, maybe from inexperience?

I have seen chickens do that also when they are not let out very early in the morning and they aren't in the "go in the nest box" mood since they are on the perch.

I think new layers do it because they don't know what is going on. Does she spend any time in the nest box? Maybe if you put a couple golf balls in the nest boxes, she will realize where to lay eggs.

X2 on both replies. Is this a new layer? If so, sometimes an egg just drops out before they figure out where to go. If you want to post more info...is anyone laying in nest boxes? What are your boxes like? Folks can be more helpful.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I had a hen who did that a few times. I always cleaned up the egg right after she dropped it to insure that they didn't start eating them. Make sure they are getting 14-16 hours of light a day. No more and no less. Don't suddenly change their access to light either. This may cause them to lay while sleeping. Make sure she has plenty of calcium. And check to make sure there is nothing wrong with the nest boxes.

Chickens have very nice laying boxes sometimes she is fine and other times she just drops them it's really kind of strange.
