its hard to tell from this picture, but there on the left... White leghorn with the back of her head still screwed up... It was just starting to be hidden by other feathers... She was killed the day after this picture... R.I.P. Lavern
 
Yes, "the ugly ducking phenomena" -they don't like white chickens, it must be some group way of weeding out those perceived as sick or as a danger for the flock. If the flock feels that they should blend better, then white would stick out and should be taken care of.
 
I have 6 reds, 2 barred rocks, 1 buff orpington, and a black star ( the one that's picked on). I don't know what the roo is. My hens are 18 months and the roo is 6 months. She has been picked on in the past but the most recent injury pccured when she started molting
 
Sometimes the new feathers coming in during a molt are an attraction to be picked at. They see the blood in the feather shaft and pick, then they continue picking..more blood, more picking and so on..I generally separate anyone who has a broken blood feather or looks like it has been picked at due to molting.
