Hi.. we have 5 girls... and I recently rebuilt the roost "ladder" to make it removable for cleaning.

However, the new roost is just a hair shorter (width wise), and now my "portly" girl Gladys doesn't seem to fit anymore,
and roosts alone on the second level roost.

With winter coming should I block a small section of the top roost to force 1 more to roost with her?
Plus she must be lonely...

I have 8 hens that are all social with one another, but at night, 7 go inside to roost and one stays outside on the top lid of a nesting box. She stays outside in light rain, during the summer and winter, but seems to go inside during snows.

I love your description of "portly" .

She must be a cutie.
Maybe she's top hen so she gets the high roost?

They will squeze one more on the roost trust me. It gets cold they will take a deep breath for the other baby.
