Chicken Run Base Material

ALl,

I just finished my chicken tractor and run and I have already had to move it twice in the past 2 weeks since the chickens have really compacted everything and eaten all the grass- I will soon have no grass in my backyard! Does anyone have any suggestions for a good base material- sand, gravel that the chickens would like and it will make it a more permanent spot in my backyard?

I have also seen grate type scenarios that go over the grass so they cant compact it? Anyone use those?

Your biggest enemy will be mud!
Chickens must have some dirt and sand to scratch in and bathe in . Use construction sand NOT PLAY SAND, but don't expect it to last long or stay put, even if you put up a wood barrier. I used paver corse paver sand in really muddy spots and it seems to work well
