Chicken Run Floor question

Gravel over a concrete slab presently. This run has a roof 6’ x 16’ . Should I cover gravel with crushed pine straw , pine straw, hay, mulch, pea gravel, crushed limestone...? The gravel layer is for drainage allowance . 1 month old chicks will soon inhabit.

Whatever you cover it with, it will ultimately all get mixed together when the chickens start scratching and digging. I would use wood chips myself.
