Hi! I'm new to raising chickens, just finished a small 4x4 coop and would like to know what material is best for the area under the coop. See the pic below? Here's a description: It is an area enclosed by hardware cloth on the floor and two walls (one side has a hen gate). The two other walls are wood. One wall opens for clean out. Ramp allows access to coop above through a trap door.
What would be the best material in this space? In the two weeks the chickens have been using this space and temporary outdoor run, the mes
h floor which had an air space below it of about 1/2 inch. Quickly filled up with pine shavings and droppings.
I raked out the shavings etc sitting on the mesh. Then I shoveled dirt in there, but now think this wasn't such a good idea.
What do you recommend for this area? Take out dirt and use sand? Pine shavings? Or?
Thanks so much!
