Chicken run ground cover

feathermaid, Hello hope you dont mind me jumping in..... I know this thread is old but I just seen your post about the pvc poultry netting and I am desperately looking for a way to stop the sand in my chicken run from getting waterlogged and trying to clean and maintain the manure mixing with soggy wet sand is impossible when the rain falls and cannot be raked when it is soggy and wet. Our chicken run is in a horse sand arena which we initially thought would not be such a wet problem but there is alot of water pooling in winter, our chickens free range most days and are locked in the run when we are working long shifts part time jobs, I really like your idea, my chicken run is 20x10 feet and we were going to try and roof it before the winter comes but as it is a galvanised steel cage covered in mesh and with the high winds we experience living by the ocean the chances of the roof causing damage to the run is quite risky and also would be very difficult to secure a roof to it whether it being metal sheets or Perspex which we were thinking of using both very expensive, many tarps have been shredded and ripped off in the storms. So my query is I see that this area of yours is not covered and I'm thinking of using the pvc poultry netting and bark instead of going to all the expense and trouble of roofing my run which may cause damage and may not last anyway. I have smaller shelters for the chickens inside the run and I am planning to add more and upgrade same especially to shelter them from the winds and rain in the winter months. I wonder what you think and if this would be a solution to my wet soggy sand problem instead of roofing, my biggest concern is if it would be sanitary which you have already mentioned above it is very clean and easy to maintain, I would really like some reassurance that this method will definitely work before I purchase the materials and apply it to my run, If you could tell me if this method is still as effective now as it was when you posted......thank you in advance for any advice and I love your idea.
