My hens are basically pets and I would be devastated if anything happened to any of them. We do have a chicken tractor that we put them in and it is just simple chicken wire but it’s also on the top. They THINK they’re free ranging but thats my little secret ha ha! I’m with @Peppercorngal ... I don’t like to get up early so I’ll leave our run closed up however the door to the coop is still open. They get up way before me .

Thanks for your feedback. We do see the occasional hawk and owl. A top is probably the way to go.

Also consider the fact that racoons can climb a fence and attack from the inside if you have no top at all. That would be awful.
