I've read that pretty much any paint should be safe for chickens as long as it's dry. Are there any that are safe while wet as while? Obviously I won't be feeding it to my hens or anything, but if they were to step in it or something like that?

Most paints put out fumes while drying, I would not subject them to wet paint. Think about painting your bedroom right before going to bed, you'd wake up with quite a headache. And then you would be using indoor paint probably, while I think an exterior paint probably would work better in a chicken coop, those usually put out nastier fumes while drying.

The trend with paints seems to be water soluble paints at the moment, discussed this with a friend who paints cars for a living and his theory was that while water soluble sounds nice and safe, they have needed to use quite interesting chemical compounds to make these paints, so to be on the safe side, I suggest letting all painted surfaces dry before letting the little cluckers near them.

I use oil base paints and I put it on thick. The fumes are very strong for about 3 days but when it dries, it is bullet proof.

This is a oil base paint bought at Lowes (Barn & Fence) comes in 2 colors.
