Yesterday I posted a thread about how my chickens are loosing the feathers on their backs. I have concludued that it is only because of my roo. Now I'm wondering if I should buy them a sattle. Is it possible for the feathers to grow back without one?

I also read that the hens can sustain ingeries worse than a loss of feathers and it can lead to cannablism???? Not exactly sure if thats true.

Anyway, is it a good investment? or should I even bother?

Yes, if they start bleeding, the others can and will peck them to death. No, their feathers aren't likely to grow back without one, because the roo will just keep ripping out new feathers that grow in. Yes, saddles are WELL worth it, if they are well made. Look in the "everything else for sale" section. Lovemychix has them on there, I have bought several from her, and they are awesome, and save my ladies' backs!!

Yes, three of my chickens are wearing aprons/saddles. I call them flack jackets. The jackets protect their backs, but not their heads. Two of the jacketed hens were pecked on the head, where they had no protection. One was hurt very badly before I discovered her. I separated both injured hens from the others, and when they are healed I am going reintroduce them to the flock and follow all the advice I can about preventing head-pecking in the future.
