chicken scratch

It's like trail mix, but for chickens, a mix of grains and "stuff".

I don't know what benefit it has for the chickens, but for owners, it makes you feel popular when they get all excited and come running when you chuck it about.

Scratch feed is a treat, scattered on the ground, not complete nutrition. It contains cracked corn, Milo, wheat, and sometimes other grains. Some brands have more variety than others. Chickens like to scratch around and search for food, and their regular concentrated feed doesn't provide this opportunity.

iv seen mixed corn, would that be it.
It seems like that's what's available there, yes. Wheat and corn. The grain mix around here is wheat, oats, corn, pellets, seashells, sunflower seeds, lots of different "stuff" in it. You can mix up something yourself, if you really want to give them scratch with more in it than the "mixed poultry corn". They really don't need scratch. I can get the same "crowd reaction" if I throw them some of their normal crumble. They have no clue what they are eating, they are enthusiastic about everything.
