Chicken sitting on a turkey egg

So since I don't have an incubator and my hen is injured and not broody, I stuck her recent egg under my super tiny silver laced wyandotte. I checked this morning and the chicken is still happily sitting on the huge egg

Awesome! Chickens really do make fantastic mothers! I went and picked my turkey eggs up the other night and the woman I got them from said that her turkeys are often hatching out chicken eggs and vice versa - she said the chickens always get a much better survival rate and her turkey hen usually loses interested in the hatchlings by the time they are three weeks - often smothering the odd one or two in the interim.

On a side note, it was the first time I'd seen a turkey in action and what awesome creatures they are! So entertaining!!! Can't wait for my babies!!!

My broody chickens have hatched out 3 turkey poults within the last 2 weeks.

LOL put another one under her this morning. Don't think I will be able to fit any more under her

She is really small. I should invest in an incubator if I am taking this seriously

Is your wyandotte a bantam? All of my wyandottes are really big.

Yes she is a bantam She is the cutest thing, I'm not really a chicken person but love her. She lays tiny little white eggs.

What a great idea to let a momma hen raise a baby turkey! Hmmm, may have to try this when we get our first eggs next spring.
