Hi

I have a hen who is 5 who has developed 'sniffles'

The night before last I was putting them to bed and I noticed she sneezed twice, but it sounded different from a irritable sneeze like she got something up her nose. I observed her and she was doing normal chicken stuff and I had been with them majority of the day and had notice anything out the ordinary. The following morning I noticed when she was eating she sounded stuffy / congested and has slight runny nose, clear discharge. Separated her immediately.

She's sneezing, sounds slightly congested at times mainly around eating, and slight clear discharge from nose.

No runny/ bubbly eyes. No mouth breathing.

She's had poultry tonic and vetrx. It's bank holiday in the UK so can get her in a vets, I can't get antibiotics online or in stores here.
She had good appetite yesterday. Seems slightly more subdued today.

The rest of the flock are not showing any obvious symptoms as yet.

Backstory: I added 4 new hens to my flock of 3 ( 7 total) approximately 5 weeks ago. I kept them separate for 2 weeks before introducing and they showed no signs of illness

Any thoughts, suggestions would be great

Update. Although I've had a hen in isolation 3 others are now showings signs. Sneezing and runny nose. No other symptoms. All eating and drinking and being chickens

Update

All hens showing signs, sneezing, clear runny nose. No other signs. All but one are eating normal amounts, the other is eating but not as much.

Drinking. Poo normal. Bright clear eyes. Good colour wattles and comb.

I'm going to try and get a vets opinion today. But any help would be appreciated.

I'm continuing with vetrx. Poultry tonic. Probiotics

Did you get them into the vet? What did they say if so? And also how are they now? I have a few with running noses right now :/
I never managed to get into a vet.

I think I'm on day 7 of symptoms first showing and all hens seem to be eating drinking and acting like chickens.

I had sneezing, runny noses and the worse affected sounded almost phlegmy at times. I've had a few soft shell eggs.

I initially isolated the first hen but then they all started showing symptoms.

Where are you based?

I have treated with vet Rx but be warned it has really dried out combs and wattles, so now applying vaseline and vet Rx just under wings and around neck feathers. I've added aviform respiratory stuff to their water. And those that seem a bit off had some poultry vitamins (net Tex poultry drops) directly into mouth.

Runny noses seem to have stopped, sneezing less but those that sounded congested remain so but have never showed any respiratory distress (ie stridor, open mouth breathing etc) my oldest hens are the worse affected

I hope it clears up for you. I’m in Texas. I’m worried my flock has caught infectious coryza :/

Hi,

I'm not familiar with the products you get there, but if/when any of ours start getting the sneezing going on for more than a day, I put Poultry Cell (full spectrum poultry vitamins and minerals) in their water every other day for a week. Most minor respiratory infections they can beat themselves. A vitamin boost helps them fight it. If their symptoms are prolonged or get seriously worse, that's when they should get an antibiotic.

It's so hard as all the symptoms blend into different illnesses and Google can make it all very overwhelming and scary.

Do you have access to a vet ?

What symptoms are they showing

I've never dealt with a respiratory illness in the 5 years I've had chickens untill this one.

Hope your flock start to pick up soon.

Let me know if you find any sound advice. Please do share

Google honestly has me so worried. I’ve been expanding my flock from what I thought were reputable breeders but who honestly knows how or why they’re sick. I have a good vet nearby who treats chickens thankfully. Next week ideally I’ll have them do testing if my others continue to show symptoms. One of my poor girls got a swollen eye and the vet said it looked to be injured but now I’m worried another is starting to have the same issue. Who knew chickens could have so many chronic diseases
