DH and I are new to raising chickens. We have 4 pullets and 1 cockerel roughly 11 weeks old now. Its been so much fun raising them. I am anxious to get eggs, but at the same time they bring so much joy to our lives I've come to realize the eggs will just be a bonus.

DH and I left for one evening and came home to find the door to the coop had closed leaving all the hens outside in the run. Three decided since they couldn't get in the coop that they'd just roost on top of it. Tonight we came home and the hens were inside the coop, but somehow managed to knock the ladder off its hooks so it was just laying on the ground. How come this stuff only happens when I'm not at home???

Not too long ago I noticed one of my hens with about 3-4 inches of a lily stem hanging out of her mouth. Thinking she was choking I rushed over to her and pulled another 4 inches out! I'm just glad I was here to help her. She and I had a nice little talk about how she should not be eating lilies

That same hen I noticed has decided she likes to sit and eat. It is so funny. She doesn't do it all the time though, but every time I see her do it, it makes me want to spread a cloth napkin under her and light some candles.

Mister Smartie Pants (our roo) kept rubbing his beak on the ground. It looked like he had some grass stuck to it. One of the hens noticed and removed it for him. Its good to have friends.

I've noticed fences seem to confuse my chickens. One day I walked through a gate and all but one hen followed. She could see us but could not figure out how to get to us even though the open gate was right next to her. I told my roo to go get Baby and he walked right up to her, but she on one side of the fence and he on the other

I guess I should have made myself more clear and asked him to go get her and show her the way. My bad.

One last story...I called for my dog and he came running and at the same time one of the hens decided to run out ahead of him, so it looked like my dog was chasing her. I swear I saw the tiniest sparkle in my dog's eye that said, "I've been wanting to do this for so long." Eventually they branched out each going their separate ways. Usually he stays clear of them, but once in awhile the roo will walk up and croak at him. I guess the roo feels he needs to remind my dog who the boss of the backyard is

Here is a photo I just find funny...that's my GLW cockerel in the foreground, and Bella the SLW wanting to make sure she got in the shot.

They are certainly fun to watch....... far more entertaining than TV.
I've got a few who love posing for pics, every time I bring out the camera all I get are close-ups of beaks.

I agree more fun than TV...good thing we don't have one! Whew!

They are sweet!
