I wanted maybe 4 laying hens to give us fresh eggs, one of my friends also wanted about 4. I ended up buying like 6 chicks from rural king but I was wanting a different breed so called around and headed to tractor supply for what was suppose to be “rare breed”, actually turned out to be EEs I think. I got about 6 of those too (order minimum) I love EEs though so great! The deal was for me to raise them then she’d take hers. They actually all lived!! She ended up not taking hers but that’s fine with me, they love it here. Fast forward around 2 years and someone was giving away some hens and rooster, my neighbor took some and I ended up with the rest. A dog ended up killing about 5 of my new ones. I as of right now have about 13-16 new baby chicks😂chicken math is real

We were looking at the chicks in RK, as one does, saying how the minimum order was too many chickens for our little yard. Then we thought, but maybe.... Next thing i know we're planning a coop and ordering from a hatchery. That was 15 years ago.

This time around we started planning as soon as the city changed the ordinance to allow chickens. Of course we still have the coop out at the farm. And next winter the girls will go through a proper molt and won't keep us in eggs through the holidays. And the local food pantry is able to accept farm eggs. So now we're planning to fix up the coop in the country and incubate a bunch of eggs. And we had to buy a new incubator, so of course we had to d9 a test hatch...so now we have the outside chickens and the basement chickens and plans to set 40 or so eggs in the next month or so.

Looking at the baby chicks is a dangerous game😂I wanted to have a bunch of egg colors, and then you start researching. Next thing you know you’re buying a heat lamp and some starter feed lol
