Chicken stress

I have free range chickens and some in pens. I feed flock raiser all the time and supplement with oyster shell. I also feed a variety of other foods. I have found that sometimes switching feed/brands suddenly has made a few of my birds sick. Also, when young roos start to mature, they turn into hormone crazed monsters for a few months and really stress the hens. A young hormone crazed roo with just a couple of hens can cause an enormous amount of stress on the ladies. If u do by chance have more than one roo, they will stress%mate ur hen to the point of killing her. I have 16 free range hens that run with a RIR, i let one of the orpington cockeral chicks stay, as i thought 2 roos could manage fine w/ 16 ladies. That orp roo stressed my hens so bad, one got sick and they quit going n2 the coop to avoid him, and egg production went down. Some roos r just hard on hens! He had to go. Chickens produce cecal poo several times a day, its very stinky, and can look like diarrhea. Cecal poo is normal, comes in all shades of brown and can be mistaken for diarrhea. While chickens are growing, they still need something more than layer feed. It does not have enough protein.

I think the BO is a male. Not sure from the pictures of the rest. Currently all my birds are getting 20% protein feed. They are all in different stages of molt. I give the older birds breeder feed and the younger birds grower feed. Both feeds are 20% protein. I thought they could use the extra protein while they are molting and the young ones are growing and molting several times their first year.

I've been using Harrell Milling Co's Super Biddy for the first 3 months then switching to 20%. Super Biddy is 28% protein. I also give it to my molting birds and seems to help. Makes those feathers grow back in fast and keeps them from feeling so run down. And of course I keep free choice oyster shell and crushed egg shells should the lady's care to partake.

My chick feed is 26% protein.

From my experience, Dumor feed always gave my girls soft, black, stinky poop. Since switching over to Flock Raiser (OS on in a separate dish) things have been great. Having read about fermenting feed couple years back, have been doing so. Aside for the nutritional benefits, I love the that a their poop is firmer, no stink & alot less of it :)

Flock Raiser here is $24/50# ... Yup it's price living here :(

That's about the same for the Dumor feed here. Luckily Harrell Milling is a short drive away or I would have to pay about $26 bag for Super Biddy! in the feed store.
