I have a question for those of you with too many roosters.
I have at 10 weeks a couple Birchen Marans, a Splash Blue Copper Marans (my son's 'favorite guy')and a Black Copper Marans (from Greenfire Farms) with probably a couple more BCMs that I'm thinking won't make the cut once I decide on my main guy . Reasons range from too much color, a couple have feathered middle toes and some are just not what I wanted - I may try to sell one of the Birchen roos with the only Birchen Female (clean shanks) they sent as a filler (all the Birchens they sent were to replace some of the blue coppers I had originally ordered but they could not fill as they have closed out their Bev Davis line of Marans). I also have a number of 7 week old Paul Smith Black and Blue Ameraucanas and what's looking like 1 Lavender Ameraucana roo (also from Paul) that I will need to eventually cull - What does everyone out there do with their extra birds, especially if rehoming does not work out. I did "cull" one rooster last year that attacked my young son but he was too old to make a good dinner (I don't cook that well). If I found someone to process them (and who does that in Southern New Hampshire) when is that best done and if not what other options are there out there? My husband is not a hunter but my parents kept chickens when i was little so I'm okay with any and all solutions.
I have been to the swaps but the roos seem to be harder to place - is free the best way to go? What about craigslist? Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks y'all!

Boo for migraines! I was so looking forward to the swap today, but I went back to bed at 8:30 with a whopper of a migraine, and woke up 10 minutes ago!

Takes about an hour to get to Walpole from here, so I won't be making it. Hope everyone had a good time and that it didn't pour too badly!

I'm not sure where in southern nh you live but just over the border in Methuen Ma. The MSPCA at Nevins Farm has a poultry program. They take in surrendered birds. The adoption fee to rescue a chicken is 10 dollars I'm not sure what the fee is to surrender a chicken. They usually have an abundance of roosters but if yours are unique they would probably have a better chance of adoption. I know that they do put them in a 30 day quarantine on the upper floor of the poultry barn before placing them out in the coops for adoption. Just mentioning a possible option for you. Check out there web site or look at petfinders.com for chickens. Good Luck!

I may sent my SLW there if it turns out to be a roo. Stay posted.

The weather held off and alot of buyers walked through. We sold quite a few Frizzles and Silkies and came home with three empty cages so I guess the two hour drive each way was worth it to me anyway. We didn't stop for lunch this time as the radiator had a leak and we just wanted to make sure we made it home. Hopefully the new radiator will be here by tomorrow. It was nice to meet alot of new people from Walpole.
