Question : Has anyone heard about the State passing a law that people can have only 6 chickens ? someone mentioned that to me ( she said her grain store told her & someone else ) , as they were wondering why I had my flock NNIP tested . They thought it was for other reasons than that I wanted it done so I can sell at the swaps ( if I decide to sell any of my birds) . Also I am selling eggs. She thinks the state is up to something . Thought I would ask if anyone heard of the 6 chicken limit

It could very well be a town thing... but never would the State institute a chicken limit - that's obscene.

Each town has it's own ordinances regarding the keeping of chickens. For instance, where I live there are no restrictions but in Derry, NH there must be fencing to keep birds from escaping and trespassing on public or private property. On lots smaller than an acre the pen also has to be covered. Concord passed a pilot program last year allowing 5 chickens if your lot meets the minimum size requirements.

With regards to only 6 chickens BOW, NH voted in March to allow residents on lots of at least 1 acre to keep up to six chickens, as long as they are 50 feet or more from the property line. Roosters are not be permitted. Bow already allowed chickens on lots of 2 acres or larger, where the pen could be placed 100-feet from neighboring properties.

Even with the state's 12 chick minimum (which will be done away with as soon as the Governor sign's HB 1231) it's not impossible to own less than 12 chickens. They can be purchased individually as long as they are 4 weeks or older. This time of year my local grain store sells them as old as 10 months and of course you can always get some from a Chicken Swap.

The best thing would be to check your own town's ordinances for rules regarding chickens.

I believe this Bill has been signed and will no longer be limited to minimum of 12 chicks under 4 weeks as of July 1.

Just checked it out. It was signed by the Governor this past Friday - 05/23/2012. It shows an effective date of 07/22/2012. YEAH!

does anyone live in milford? i havent been able to find how many chickens i can have, i know i have to give up the rooster should people start to call in complains but i hope they come to me before doing so. i will have 12 hens and one rooster, and i live on .26acres.

According to the Town of Milford Zoning Ordinance, per section 5.04.1, acceptable use of a Residential "R" district includes Agriculture and Farming. Agriculture and Farming, defined in section 4.01.0, includes the raising, breeding, or sale of poultry or game birds. From the looks of it there are no regulations on the quantity of chickens you can keep.

Here is a link to the town ordinances for Milford.
