Hi and sorry for this off topic question. You all seem to post more here daily than in the NH thread. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a certified poultry tester. we brought home 3 new young turkeys and they seem to be sick, coughing, nostil snot bubbles and crusty beaks. I want to return them or cull. My husband desperately wants me to find a tester to be sure they arent curable before we cull them. I did start them on Tylan 50 just incase. Any ideas are appreciated. So sorry to hear that. I know the NH Dept of Agriculture can run a bunch of different blood tests. I'm not sure of the wait period for them though. http://agriculture.nh.gov/contactus.htm When we get our NPIP testing done they can also do a bunch of other tests for different diseases such as MG. Your best bet is to call them in the morning. If they can't do it they've probably got contacts who can. Good luck!

Good call. Hopefully they were in quaranteen at your house. You'll want to make sure to thoroughly clean everything they used and get rid of the bedding they were on. Crates, waterers, carriers and probably a bunch of other things I can't think of right now. Glad you caught it early.

I noticed it as soon as I looked at them im not sure how my husband missed it. So we had them here for a total of 22hours in a quarantine area. I was mad at my husband though because when he got home he put them in the garage near my brooder of the marans chicks. He thinks i do everything overkill and didnt know how serious I was about quarantine. They were about 15ft away from each other for about 45-60mins. Hopefully there was no transmission. Agh scary thought.

Any suggestions on what to clean the ground with? They had a tiny corner of our yard opposite the other poultry. and they were on the ground. Probably wasnt a smart idea.

I've never had to clean the ground with anything, sorry. I use DE in the coops and run. I've read great things about oxine but don't know if it'll work on the ground. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the marans chicks!

To answer these questions, you really need to know what you were dealing with. DE works well to keep mites and lice at bay, but it isn't the end all/be all. Respiratory issues are nothing to mess with and can be nasty and spread quickly...not to be the bearer of bad news. Does the original owner have any idea what it might be? You might want to check out Mercks Vet manual online and see if you can do a little self diagnosis and then proceed with their recommendations. Good luck!!

The original owners have no clue what it is they werent even aware of a sickness in their flock until I mentioned these turkeys symptoms and they went and looked over their flock. I returned them to her this morning. I will bleach the crate they were in and also burn all the bedding. As for the ground I think I will dig it all up and burn it in the fire tonight also. I needed to regrass anyway. The ground area is where my chickens and turkeys do not walk on its in a small fenced in area sometimes used for my dogs so I just need to make sure my dogs dont track anything around. I cornered the sick turkeys off a small section. This situation makes me not want to add anything new to my flock. Looks like Ill stick with what I have and hatch my own chicks and poults from my own stock. This is too nerve wracking to ever do again. I really hope nothing was passed through the air.

I will take any suggestions though on how to treat the ground if anyone has an idea on how to do it. I may just make a bleach and water solution and spray it over the area. I have no clue.

I feel for you, I know how stressful it is. I lost my whole flock, chickens and turkeys this summer to Infectious Bronchitis, it spreads like wild fire. My birds caught it because someone who visited my yard had chickens that were infected with IB and they brought it in on their clothes/shoes. I am very cautious now with biosecurity, lesson learned the hard way! I would take drastic measures for the ground, if it's respiratory it can spread so easy. I was told by the pathologist that IB could be spread through the air 1000 yards away!!! I assume other respiratory diseases are the same way.
