Howdy,

Most the chickens will follow me, some will come close but most of the time they all run away if i try and pet one.

But sometimes i try and pet one and it'll crouch down and put its wings up a tiny bit and it's tail down, does that mean its like wanting me to pick it up or does that mean it is terrified or what?

x2, it's a mating squat. If you want to "be the rooster" you can rub them firmly on their backs just above the tail for 5-10 seconds, and they'll fluff out afterwards (be warned that if you do that, they will start seeking you out and dropping into a squat right at your feet as you walk, which some people like and some people don't). Personally I encourage it as it makes it very easy for me to tell who is laying and who isn't.
