Are there any diseases that a chick can carry that might make us sick?
My MIL said that there are and that we should get them out of the house. I just got 6 chicks today and my hubby hasn't had the time to get my brooder built in the garage. Should I be concerned with my 2 year old and the chicks? I do make him wash his hands (and anyone else) after they touch the chicks.

Thank you very much, just read the whole thing. And as long as I wash our hands and don't let my son handle them too much, we will be fine.

I was typing when you posted. I was going to say not to lick the chicks too.

Great minds...

I would just use common sense. Keep the birds and litter clean. Wash hands after touching them. Watch for signs of illness in the birds. MIL is probably worrying too much.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I keep my chicks in the house... until I cant stand the dust anymore... I am a hatching fool so I ALWAYS have chicks in the house... I am NOT worried about catching any disease.

Your MIL is a worry wart

For what it's worth, like slickchik - I'm always hatching babies out too and I've never worried about catching anything either. In fact, until this thread the thought never even crossed my mind LOL
