One of my roosters, Fred, is about 15 months old. Whenever I approach him he’ll try to find a corner, beside a bush or a corner of the coop and crouch down and make a screechy noise. It reminds me of a dog that’s been mistreated. I’ve never EVER hit or kicked or anything like that to Fred. Once I say his name, he’ll look at me and stand up and act like himself. I’m very hands-on with my chickens especially Fred. He’s spoiled. He’s not aggressive, he’s not being bullied by other roosters, he’s the dominant rooster of his flock. This behavior started a few weeks ago, and I can’t figure out why. Any ideas?

Maybe it's his way of greeting you. Roosters will often show hens a good place to lay an egg. It could be in line with that behavior, especially if he views you as part of his flock.
Awww..oh you know what, I posted a question about a month or so ago about the same rooster acting broody. At the time he had access to the nesting boxes. He would jump into a nesting box and scream when I approached him. Now he’s using any dark corner area.
What a good boy! Too bad I can’t take him up on his offer, makes me feel bad lol. Thank you!

Pretend to sit where he crouched and drop a golf ball there before you leave 🤣
