I need some help deciphering what this chicken noise means! All my chickens are 6 months old, and Dandelion is the only one who makes a noise like this. She is the one who runs up to the gate to greet me every time I come to the coop/run. She likes to hop up in my lap when I sit on the lawn chair in the garden (which I have allowed them to scratch down to dirt since it's the end of the growing season). She seems to like it when I pick her up, as she doesn't flap her wings or try to squirm away. She lets me hold her to my chest and pet her, and all the while she makes this little trill noise. I have not heard this from any of the other chickens.

Someone once mentioned that she may like me because she's pretty low in the pecking order, and I am nice to her, and give her treats first.

Does this little trill mean she's happy? Or is it that she's a runt, and is not as mature as the other chickens? Thanks ahead of time.

i have a few chickens that do this too.. mine will stand off and do this, i wonder if they want something from me, like treats.. they never do it when i'm holding them.. more like when they WANT attention.. my black australorps do it and they have a gutteral sound.. deeper..

Yes, the chickens make all sorts of noises. Some are more vocal than others, and have different "voices" and noises they make. Some of mine yell really loudly after laying an egg, and others are perfectly quiet. Some are "chatterboxes", others don't utter a peep.
You can tell she likes her lap time because she stays there. She's gorgeous, whatever her song choices.

Hello,

I agree with the rest. I have had several flocks of chickens over the years, and my Polish hen makes that noise. She only makes it when the other two chickens in my backyard come up to her. I suspect its most likely a happy sound. Either way, she is really pretty!

I raise chickens for showmanship by the way.

Take care and good luck!

I guess that’s true but all my girls make that noise to me and my husband- but when they see me take their eggs- oh wow they go nuts!!!! Very different sound!

I have noticed that to be a sound indicating curiosity or expectancy, depending on the bird.

That's interesting. I picked my Marcy up today and she made that noise. I don't pick her up much and it sounded a bit 'what's happening'? (not WHAT"S HAPPENING! LET ME GO!, just like curiosity/uncertainty, as you say)
