They lack their first vertebrae? Or maybe they get two genes of rumplessness or tufts. (I think sometimes the tufts grow inside of the chick and they die).

I'm pretty sure it's because rumplessness is a lethal gene, like the short legs of Japanese. If they get two copies of it, 20% die in the shell. Same thing with tufts. Sometimes they grow inside of the chick and it dies.

Yes! Except I though the gene was 25% not 20% I just rounded from 7.5 to 8.
