chicken trying to cluck but nothing's coming out

I noticed a chicken today who seemed to be trying to make some noise but nothing was coming out - almost a gasping when it opened it's beak, but no sound. It was eating and running around ok...but I am worried. has anyone seen this? Is it a sign of something bigger? and worse? The coop hasn't been cleaned in almost 2 weeks and is smelling ammonia-like (I've been away and hubby doesn't do coops)

My hen does the same thing, now that she's setting on a clutch of eggs. Kinda like she's whispering for me to HUSH!
