Chicken update

Hey everyone! I wanted to say thank you guys for all the help, love, and support for me and my chicks! This was my first time getting chicks and you guys really helped me through it! Sadly one of my chicks passed away around 2 weeks of age. Then we got one more chick from a family member who had the same age chicks. The chicks are now 13 ish weeks old and unfortunately 2/3 were roosters. Due to the fact that this was my first time so I only had 3 chickens I had to rehome all 3. Rehoming was sadder than I thought, I guess I never realized how much I loved those chicks!! For the future I was looking into some breeds like Orpingtons and Favorellos. I would really appreciate it if you guys let me know your opinion on those breeds, what breeds you like, and what I could’ve done better to avoid tough situations with roosters and chick deaths. Thank you guys again!

Personally, orpingtons are some of my favorites because of their friendly personalities and quirky antics. They are usually really nice to people but I have had a couple mean ones. I think that they would be a great fit though!

I'm sorry to hear of your experiences. They really do grow on you, don't they? I know it can be risky and there may be losses, but we've always gotten our chicks from hatcheries through the mail. This way we can order, and receive, only pullets, and the hatcheries will give refunds or replacements for any losses.

As for best breeds, everyone will have their favorites. Mine happen to be Easter Eggers. They generally lay blue, green or other pastel colored eggs. They do not go broody, are easy-going, good foragers and both heat- and cold-tolerant.
