Chicken Virgin in AZ...

My mother-in-law and I are getting our first brood of hens if a couple weeks! Very Excited!!! The plan is to have them for eggs and when they stop producing, for dinner :-/ The later being my biggest concern. I think it will be difficult not to think of them as pets... I'll be that lady with a bunch of senior clucks all growing old together hehe... But seriously, does anyone have chickens that they use dual purpose? Looking for some points of view to help me decide what sort of chicken owner I'll be.
