Chicken Virgin

Since its to hot to lock them up...try keeping good and water in it so they must go in to eat. I trained mine to come when i call..so I go in at night and call them and offer bedtime treats..bread or mealworms..does the trick for me.or..u can try going inside a few times a day and offering treats to train them yo come when you call.

Training them to come when I call is the plan. Right now I'm just feeding them a few times a day from my hand (regular food), but they'll have meal worms at the store in a couple of days, then I'll start training them to a call or sound of some sort. I've done it with cats...I've got a degree in psychology many decades ago...Pavlov Rules! Once I've trained them I can let them free range a bit while I'm there...and get them back into the run when I want to go.

I order mealworms grom Amazon. I get 10k at a time. I have been working on raising my own..so..some of them I let mature into beetles. I have 40 chickens...thats a lot if bugs!!!!

Eventually, I'll get a Black Soldier fly colony started and use them. I'm so far behind.:th

Mealys are much easier..i looked at soldier flies..to much work! I keep my mealys in bran. Feed then carrots..sweet tators and bread. I currently have 5 bins going..try to set up 4 more...and I think I'll b able to keep a good supply. I also get 5lb bags of dry bugs on occasion.

Ok...update! 3 nights ago the girls figured how to get into the coop on their own. YAY! I was out the night before, so I left the coop door open all night (the run is secure, and I didn't want the door to close before they got in it). So now it's the 7:15 chicken show...which one will figure it out first. This evening we went out for dinner, and I set the coop door to close at 8:30...all the girls where in and roosting when I got home. Life is good!

Names...we have named them all except one:

Bella (Isabella bird) is the rescued silver leghorn,

Frita (Frita Kahlo) is our Easter Egger (that beard on her just reminds me of Frita's eyebrows, plus we expect artistic eggs!)

Madam Curie (or Marie Curie...we'll see which one sticks) for our Black Australope. She figured out the watering nipples to the point of pushing the metal part to get water, then drinking the water (shows scientific thought!)...the others just poke their beaks in and drink.

Daphne Du Maurier - the Buff Orpington. She just looks like a daphne, and she's very curious about things, she's very observant always looking around.

Lucille "Lucy" Ball is our Rhode Island Red - kind of goofy, and red. I know Lucille Ball was really bright, but the character she plays was goofy.

Only the Barred Rock to go....and since she is a "Bard" rock, we are thinking of a name from one of the great bard's plays. Hecate, Desdemona....I'll let my son search shakespeare plays for a name for her.
