Hi chicken pals,
Ok does anyone know what this yellowish goo that's all over our eggs is? I have noticed it sometimes but today there is a lovely pile of it in the coop as well as on the eggs. Cannot take a pic now but just wondering if this is anything to be concerned about besides just being gross?

Thanks for any advice!
Nic

That would be my guess too.

As far as I know, chickens don't vomit as a sign of illness. I have seen my chickens dribble water out of their beaks when they've drank too much too fast or if you pick them up right after they've had some water.

My guess would be that you either have feces on the egg or someone is passing egg remnants/soft shelled eggs. You didn't mention seeing any egg shells around. Soft shelled eggs are hard to pass because of their lack of a hard surface for the body to exert force on and they can rupture inside the hen and then leak out slowly leaving behind some pretty disgusting goo. Does the yellow look like yolk? Or does is look more like poop?

You wouldn't see any shell parts around as your hens would have eaten them immediately.

My guess is too many eggs in one nest, your hens are moving them around trying to lay theirs. One cracks/breaks and gets eaten (shell and all) and the yolk/whites end up covering the other eggs in the nest. They will look yellow and smell like egg.

Try collecting more often, or spend a few hours watching them lay to make sure. This is my best educated guess.
