When I went to check on my chicken and duck today I noticed a lot of feathers on the ground and all the eggs were broken. I don't see or feel any wounds on her and it looks like she is only missing her tail feathers, but when she tries to cluck only a sneeze like sound comes out or nothing at all. Other then that she seems okay, she is eating and walking around like normal. Should I be worried? Did she just cluck so much she lost her voice? Any help would be appreciated.

Update: She now makes no noise when she tries to cluck, and is constantly trying to. Is she okay?

Two things could be responsible for your hen going mute. First would be the simple fact that injured and sick chickens almost always will go mute since they have an instinct not to want to call attention to themselves because of their weakened state.

The second possibility is that your hen has suffered internal injuries that you may not be able to detect. For example, the lungs of a chicken are located high on their backs and are easily damaged by a predator attack. Injury can cause extreme stress, and a chicken will open their beak and appear to pant when they are experiencing stress, which may look as if they are trying to be vocal and no noise can come out.

In addition to possible injuries, your hen is likely suffering from shock from the extreme stress of the attack. It would help to treat her with electrolytes and a warm place to help her recover.

Thank you so much for the help. Would internal injuries have any other noticeable symptoms? and if she has internal injuries is there anything I can do?
