I have a 10x20 dog kennel that will be my future run for the chicks I have in the brooder. I put chicken wire across the entire bottom of the run and back filled about 6 inches of soil above the wire. Will this be suitable for predator control and will it be deep enough for the chickens to dig in and not hurt their feet on the wire? Also as protection from hawks I covered the top with chicken wire.

It will work. Keep in mind that it will rust eventually, and it is possible that a determined predator could rip/dig through it. I did the same thing only I used another chainlink panel for the floor with about 2 inches sand under that for drainage. The chickens should have no problem with it.

Thank you. I'm glad to hear it would work. when it does rust away I will probably run hardware cloth around the run and bend it to cover the ground.
