Chicken Wire under Chicken tractor?

Quote:
Try hardwire cloth instead of chicken wire. Chicken wire is no match for most predetors. My tractor has been right on the edge of my 36 acre woods with no problems.

Ok, so my temporary fix is I have been taking 2 large dog crates in each night and putting the chicks in the crates for the night. Not an ideal situation but better than being eaten by what we are now guessing is a rat (hole to get in was WAY to small for a racoon)

The first night it took us a little while to get them in. The 2nd night not as long. The third night they pretty much all got in on their own. Last night, they were standing at the door of the crate waiting for me to open the door so they could get in. I opened the door and they all jumped right in. Pretty cool!

This weekend I'm going to get some hardware cloth and go around the outside and make sure it is staked down each night.

Also, since I have moved the tractor father away from the barn, nothing has tried to break in at all. We had 2 alpacas born this last week so I got busy with taking care of them so I didn't get the hardware cloth on. Hopefully this week.

I am using 2 large dog kennels right now at night to keep them safe.

Good to hear Bill.

I put 48 meat birds into the freezer over the weekend.
I only lost 2 of the 50 I purchased.

No predator losses this year. Although I did trap two raccoon and a mangy red fox.

OK, this is an old thread but another thought for anyone else that comes later:

We used to have a similar tractor and we kept it on grass all day and pulled it onto concrete at night. You could also build a bottom out of wire and just set the tractor on it every night.

We have a coop now, but need to build some tractors as something took two chickens this week and I'm sure they'll be back.

Neil G, what is that flooring?

I was thinking that the wire used for rabbit hutches might work. Strong, but with holes big enough for grass to poke through.
