First post, hello!

Ive got a 8 week old Wyandotte that was injured sometime between Wednesday and Thursday, noticed her Thurs evening holding up her leg. It looks like a lot of small punctures and was freshly scabbed over. Have no clue whether a small animal got in or she got caught up in some chicken wire, or if the other chicks were aggravating the problem. They weren't bothering her that I could tell when I noticed all this.

Anyways, brought her in that night. She was extremely lethargic. Syringe fed her electrolytes and washed the wounded areas with banixx. First 24 hrs was touch and go, but by now she's standing when I check on her and eating and drinking with assistance. No bleeding, but the leg is swollen and warm (could just be from her tucking it though). She won't stand on it and it does seem stiff at the knee. There is a small white bubble on the joint, I first thought infection but it seems very fluid, possibly joint fluid?

My overall question is if I'm missing any important care, and if I should worry about the leg. Very nervous about infection or her just simply losing the ability to move it. Adding a pic, the white fluid bubble is on top and if anyone knows what the wounds are from I would love to know. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Byc!! This definitely looks pretty nasty. I use a spray and currently am running on a blank right now on what its called but this bubble can you pop it? Its definitely infected if its warm, and I usually give them Tylan 50 and it helps

Thanks!

I've been using Banixx spray and a soft cloth to dab at the wounds/matted feathers. I attempted to pop the bubble before making this post but nothing seemed to come out, and I didn't want to put too much pressure on the leg. There's definitely liquid in there. Doesn't seem like a pus though. The rest of the leg seems swollen but solid. I'll look into picking up some Tylan, thank you!

Forgot to mention all the chicks had their Marek's when I ordered them. Besides refusing to put the leg down and the fatigue caused by standing like this after a few minutes my little lady is bright eyed and alert.

Yes what you are doing is pretty much all can do, besides the Tylan 50. If you do get it the dosage is .5 mL per pound, I usually do .25 mL twice per day. They make powder for water but I just get the injectable and put it in the water. Keep us informed!!
