One of my hens has an injured leg. I separated her from the flock so now she's living in a dog crate in my basement. I checked for bumble foot, and I don't think it's Marek's disease. I'm pretty sure she just sprained it or something jumping off the roost. She has been eating and drinking and I gave her an half a baby aspirin that she ate out of my hand. The only thing I'm worried about is her getting really bored!! Is there anything I can do to entertain her while she heals that allows her to still remain stationary or have little movement? Or do I just take my wins with my losses and allow her to be bored until she is ready to go back with the flock?

Aside from sitting with her or giving her treats, there's not much you can do. I've been there. I had an injured hen I had to keep closed up for five days and I felt so bad for her, but it's for the best! Just like a sick person doesn't like being cooped up in the hospital. Hopefully your little gal is fine!

Thank you so much!

It might be more interesting to keep her with the flock if possible, in the coop, run, or outside where they free range or hang out. That makes it easier for her to remain part of the flock, and not have to be reintroduced later. Can you post any signs of the leg injury, such as swelling, redness, or green bruising? What part of the leg is hurt?

I'm afraid to keep her outside because it gets really hot and there would be no place to go if she wants to cool down. Maybe during the evening we can venture out to her pals. As for signs of the injury, there is no swelling or red or green bruising that I can see... The only thing she's doing is limping and laying down all the time.

I have a limpy hen too...I let her go her own speed with the flock and she is quite content staying under the trees when they wander. I flipped her over and checked everything...it seems like a sore knee. Poor things. She has no problem gimping over for a handful of mealworms tho!
