Hey all!

I’ve recently taken on chickens from my husbands coworker. I assumed (you know what they say about assuming) she checked her chickens health so i didn’t think to check the chickens apron arrival. Well soon arrival i noticed they were covered in lice and mites so i bathed them and got majority of the mites and lice off. And kept them separate from my chickens.

Fast forward to 3-4 weeks or so later and one of the chickens has a weird thing on her butt that i thought was a soft egg she had sat in and was stuck to her. But i was wrong. the outer layer came off and the bottom looked like this and was very much attached to her. This chicken is 8, and yes I’m still working on the lice eggs as well.

I did do an epsom Salt soak the other day and didn’t notice any changes. my worry is we are Heading into our cold seasons and i don’t want to have to bring her inside to bath and dry off in a warm house to have to go back outside to the cold.

Any idea what this could be? Chicken is eating and drinking normally.

Welcome to BYC!

I'd suggest using Permethrin (garden dust) for the coop and the chickens, then repeat in 10 days. That should kill all of the live ones and eggs. You're still dealing with this nearly a month later and that's taking a toll on the chickens plus yourself.

For that lump, is that the yellow crusty thing on her? It does look like egg matter, but I'd still soak her and see if it comes off. You can always just stick her butt in a tub or the sink and soak it for a few minutes, then after inspecting it closer, blow her dry with a blow drier on low/warm. I'm not sure what that would be otherwise.

Were you rescuing these birds or were you starting a flock of your own? I can’t believe someone would give you birds covered in parasites. I would have returned them. I agree that Prozac permethrin garden dust is very good to use for mites and lice. Apply it once and again in 10 days to get any newly hatched eggs. Permethrin 10 concentrate mixed with water 5 ml to a quart or liter can be used as a premise spray for the coop, nests, and roosts. You have to be vigilant to get rid of them. As far as the mass, I would soak it again. It could be a tumor feather cyst, but hard to know.

I already had 13 chickens before taking in her 3. My husband had a coworker who’s moving and unable to take her hens, since she will be splitting her times between 2 states. She had these chicks since they were babies and they are 8 now so she wanted to make sure they got a good home. 🙃

So now I’ve been taking care of it and got the spray and sprayed the coop, and the chickens. But the lump is still there so we’ll see what happens after another one or two soaks.

I did get permethrin spray for the chickens and the coop.

I did soak her and that’s what it looked like after the soak. So I’ll try and soak her again soon and see if that helps more.
