Chicken with maggots in the vent

Saline is just table salt in warm water, 2 tsp per every quart of water. You can spray or dab that on her, and if you have plain Teiple Antibiotic/Neosporin ointment, that works well on wounds and vents.

No peroxide. It won’t hurt with using one time, but it can prevent wound healing. Saline is very gentle and to make some, use a quart/liter of water. Bring to boil, reduce to simmer for 15 minutes with a lid. Cool it, and you have sterile saline.

I have a duck with Flystrike and I called my vet and asked what he prefers....he said soak in warm a little soapy with epsom salt for at least 5 minutes. Dry with hairdryer. I used warm heat on high blowing and kept pressing the cool button intermittently.

Then he said to spray Ether (which is actually starter fluid and highly flammable and smells bad) on the wound. I was scared to do that...so I researched it. It appears that it numbs the area and helps to kill the maggots.

Then I removed them with tweezer and gloved fingers. Then he wanted a little vaseline put on it too. I asked the vet what about topical or oral ivermectin and they said it would take to long and this was an emergency. It can also cause infection because any internal worms die inside. I am not recommending this treatment...just telling what my vet told me.

I did this last night and then again this morning. I also put 1 drop of pour on ivermectin for cattle 5mg per ml on her back topically last night in hopes of getting any I missed that were internal. I took this chance It appears that most of them are gone. Only had about 20 left. This morning I also gave her Tylan injectable. She isn't eating or drinking electrolytes much but she seems more comfortable. I also have her locked in my bathroom in a cage away from more flies.

I hope your chicken heals up soon.

Sadly she just barely passed away. I tried to help but he was just to weak. I had soaked her 3 times and got most of the maggots but there were just to many and the infection was to far. I checked the rest of my flock and they seem fine. She probable had some condition that cause runny poop and caused it to attract flies

I am so sorry for your loss. I would check your other chickens for any poopy vents or for any wounds or pecking around vents.
I did check the rest of them most of them are completely clean or very minor poop around their Vents. Since this happened I’ll be more diligent about watching for this
