Chicken with Possible Skin Cancer?

You said heat lamp. She looks fully feathered now. And just two feet above them? Not saying this is related to the heat lamp, but what wattage are you using and how cold is it still at night there?

To me, it does look like something she's hurting that spot on, either being pecked or scraping the same spot over and over again on something, maybe pulling her head through some wire repeatedly.
They are in our garage in a big Rubbermaid. She feathered in faster the one of my wellies. We are moving them outside this week. I still have the chick feeder in there with them. I did notice last night when I was watching them that she was would stand on the feeder and stick her head in there and rub her head on that spot both ways (going in to eat and pulling her head out). I really hope that's all it is. There is no open wound/scratch/gouge or anything like that so hopefully its just a funny bruise. Thank you everyone and I really am not trying to be difficult and argumentative. I just know that what I am seeing is not an opened wound. Although I wish it were I think it would be easier to deal with.

Perhaps it could be an abrasion from the feeder. If so, I'd put some Blu-Kote on it to help it heal, and mostly to keep the other chicks from pecking at it (they like to peck at anything "different"). I believe you when you say it's not a wound, though... I think that most of us know the difference between a wound and some kind of funky skin problem.

I WOULDN'T just assume it's cancer, though. Stop and think about how many skin problems that humans are subject to... it could be anything from an allergy to psoriasis to a bug bite to a wart or who knows what (although I really have no idea what skin diseases that chickens might be subject to). Just stay calm and do what nearly every doctor does.... treat the symptoms. Unless you want a vet bill for a skin scraping I think that's your only choice right now.

One other thing comes to mind, have you checked her carefully for bugs (lice or mites)? I don't know very much about them, but I do know that head mites/lice can be big problems with chicks. Might be worth researching.

I went and bought the last can of Blu Kote that my local feed store had. I sprayed some on a paper plate and used a Qtip to apply it to her head. It's a bit more raised today then yesterday.

hoping the blu kute helps!

That spot has risen up but hasn't spread farther out. I have the Blu Kote on it so I am unsure as to what it looks like when its not purple. It not just looks like she has a mole on her head. She is still acting normal and it still gaining weight at the same rate as my Wellies. I am hoping that's a good sign.

That Blu-Kote color will stay on there for months, so you'll just have to go by whether it enlarges or not or if she develops any symptoms. At least the Blu-Kote will keep the others from pecking at it. Let's hope the thing just fades away, or at least just stays the same.

So after that spot raised up and fell off and it looks like feathers stubs are trying to grow back in.

Yes I know this is just a chicken and yes I did pray to God about it and put my faith in him on this one. I gave my stress and worry to him, if I can't do that on something like this how will I when it's something more important. So now I am asking should I still keep putting Blu Kote on it? the spot is not red anymore but there is s skin spot showing. It's such a small spot now. She has even gain an full ounces since yesterday!

I've just never heard of a chicken getting skin cancer. They do, however, wound their heads in so many ways. I had a chick rip all the skin off the back of his neck from the head to the shoulders once by getting his head stuck into some opening and pulling it back out. Cleaning the wound and using antibiotic ointment was all we did and it healed up just fine, though I'm not sure he ever grew all his feathers back in that area as an adult-you'd have to ask lockedhearts since she owns him.
