Chicken with prolapse I think I made worse

My sweet chicken, Meeshamoo, has a prolapse. It’s the first one I have seen. I called the vet but she can’t see her for a week. The vet said to try pushing it back in. I tried, but at the end of the red part is a hard, light brownish colored covering. It seemed somewhat crusty so I soaked her in a warm bath. It seemed to lift off somewhat and tore in spots. It pushed in and is staying, but she only poos liquid. What did I do?!?! I think I might have made it worse. She only pooed liquid before I touched it. She eats but her crop seems too full. I am holding off on more food and giving just water. Please help!

Can you post photos?

I would start giving her extra Calcium asap. Calcium Citrate with D3 is ideal but if you don't have that, TUMS will work until you can get some.

You can find Calcium Citrate with D3 in the vitamin aisle of stores like Walmart, CVS, etc. Give 1 tablet daily, just pull down on her wattles, pop the tablet into the beak and let her swallow.

When you pushed the tissue back in, did you happen to feel if there was an egg? If there's an egg, then she may prolapse again when she tried to lay it. Don't panic, the calcium can help and if the tissue comes back out and won't go back in, then keep it moist with ointment, oil or raw honey.

Re-check her crop first thing in the morning before she has anything to eat/drink to see if it's gone down or empties.

Pooing liquid is a concern, but with swelling and inflammation if she's able to poop at all, it's a good thing.

See if it gets better once inflammation goes down and her crop is emptying.

After looking researching the problem more and trying to figure out a solution, I decided to separate her from the flock and try soaking her in a warm bath with epsom salt. I tried massaging the exposed cloaca back inside, however I was unsuccessful. I bought some antibacterial and witch hazel sprays that I put on it. After that, I just left it, and in a day or two of seclusion it had gone back to normal. I’ve heard that once a chicken gets prolapsed vent, it’s more likely to get it again in the future, however I have never had this problem again, and Goldie quickly went back to laying soon after recovering.

Thank you for your response. She is secluded from the flock and seems to have found comfort with my indoor blind chicken (no worries of Meeshamoo being pecked by her). Prayers said and fingers crossed for today.

I checked her crop this morning. It was a bit better, but lots better by afternoon. Her poo has a bit more consistency and not really liquidy. I am wondering how many mg you give of the calcium citrate with d3. The caplets I got are so big.

600mg is the recommended dose. Even though the caplets seem much too large for a chicken to swallow, your hen will be easily able to swallow the tablet whole. Pull down on her wattle as Wyorp Rock suggested, then quickly pop the caplet into her beak. Be sure to place the caplet on top of her tongue or she will spit it out, and don't try to push it down her throat. As soon as the caplet is in her beak and on top of her tongue, her natural reflex will cause her to swallow it.
