Chicken Wound Healing Process

My dog got my girl with bites. My experience is at "my dog killed 15 hens" she too was resilient. Good luck.

Really happy to have read all of this. After a previous roommate's dogs killed a few of my birds, my dog begun to show the wrong kind of interest in them. Someone left my coop open the other night and now nearly half of my flock is dead. My best egg layer, Gerdy has a wound almost twice the size your post mentioned but she is acting fine, so I have high hopes. The wound is about halfway under her wing tip, so it is getting some air and seems to be dry enough. I have her in a kennel with food and water in chick feeders, and she is eating and drinking. I am using old shirts for bedding because I thought it would be easier to swap out every day to try and keep her space clean.

The last one to get attacked hasn't laid another egg since and it's been about 3 months. Betty's attack was just some lost feathers and a bruises on her leg and thigh.

I'm afraid that I'll end up with a bunch of chickens that don't even lay.

Really good pictures. Amazing how these wounds can resolve.
Whispers would not eat after the attack so I did have to tube her. she was losing weight awfully fast. She is still laying.
Great news about your girl.

Gerdy is back to her happy self, albeit a bit more skittish now. The wound healed amazingly well and she almost has all of her feathers back. The featherless spot is a little bit bigger than the size of a halfdollar.

Hey everyone,

So about a month ago, our hen, 'Pat' was attacked by a raccoon. I've been blogging about her healing progress as I thought it might be useful for anyone else going through the same thing.  I had trouble finding photos of wounds as big as hers (she had a huge chunk of skin torn off), so it was tough for me to figure out if she was going to make it. You can read it here: Chicken Wound Healing Process.  ***WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTOS***

Also, I just wanted to thank everyone who has posted previously about similar issues. This forum has been super valuable to me for this situation!

Thank you for the info my chicken's were attacked by raccoons one lost her wing but seems better than the one that had her back eaten . Hoping they can heal

I lost 7 chickens to a dog I was fostering..the went out the window to getto the chickens...Three are doing good but my yr old "pet" is not doing great..she is eating and drinking but can not use one leg..toes just curl up. Vet did staple her back together but did not do anything to her leg and rib area..too much skin ripped off I guess. Remaining feathers are stiff with blood and drainage. Seems like she should be cleaned up some more? The med I was given by vet was Betagen/Gentocin. Has anyone heard of it? Good or not? It has alcohol in it/ Meanwhile I got Vetericyn Plus?
