Do Rhode Island reds or Plymouth hens tend to lay a good amount of eggs ?

rir hens and I assume you mean Plymouth barred rock.

I have both in my flock and yes lay a lot of large brown eggs. With exceptions of sex linked that is about all the stores carry for laying hen chicks in my area.
So I would recommend them fully
