Hello everyone. My name is Laura and I live in south central Michigan in the small town of Jonesville. I have been checking out chickens for the past two years. I think my DH is just fed up with the topic, and has finally relented. I can get some chickens......next year *sigh* I guess I should be thankfull, but it does seem like an awfully long time to wait. My DH is an Essex boy from England and we have a daughter who will be four this year and a new addition to the family in December. I am thinking that we will try to get the coop ready this year so that next spring we will be ready for the next step. I am hoping to start out with 10 or so, and thinking that we will probably loose a few to start with, hopefully not though. If anyone lives within an hour or so I would love to check out your set up and help give us some ideas. The only thing my husband asks is that our coop is "tidy" looking. So....I will continue checking out all the beautiful chicken pics on BYC and look forward to next spring with much anticipation. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better.

I used to teach in Tecumseh and board my horse in Onsted.

Your daughter will love the chickens. Mine is 4, soon to be 5 in Sept. and she loves them! We had some guys over today cutting firewood with chainsaws and even with clipped wings, two hens panicked enough to go over the fence. My daughter dutifully caught and cuddled each one and put them back in their run. When they start laying, it'll be her duty to collect eggs twice a day.

Note: we bought a roaster from our neighbors and when she asked "When are we going to cook the turkey?" I had to explain it was a chicken. Later, my husband said, "We'll have to get another chicken to eat from them." We spent a good portion of the evning explaining "eating chickens" to her.
