Chickenless in Pennsylvania

Greetings press1forenglish, Welcome to BYC!
Have a great Thanksgiving! :frow

the processing costs is $6 per bird where I am at last time I checked.
$6/bird?? CRAZY! At $6/bird, I'd jump in the business tomorrow and quit my day job. Not sure we are talking the same currency here, but $2/bird is more normal here in the USA, $2.50 is common, but usually somewhere in between which can be quantity based. I might be new on the board here, but I am not a fresh-hatch.

If you saying you can lower you cost by processing yourself for free, you just give away the money you would be making processing somebody else;s birds
Hmmm, not sure that statement made any sense whatsoever. I was speaking of businesses that make money from processing poultry. There is a cost of labor and equipment. They certainly don't lose money processing other people's poultry! They supplement their own income by offering their service which forces the people using their service to charge more to offset the expense.

or loyal clientele who like the product
No... I truly meant suckers paying for an inefficient farming practices (loss by disease, bad raising conditions, counting chickens before they hatch, or many other reasons); therefore having to charge more to keep afloat. Market price is market price (not talking about wholesale Perdue or Tyson at a supermarket). I can always get a little more for vegetables at market than a grocery store, but mainly because I offer things not widely available. If my pepper crop gets devastated by flood or wind damage (or poor, inexperienced farming practices) ... asking for the consumer to pay for my mistakes or unfortunate circumstances is just wagging the dog. Same product, different price as can be had elsewhere from a more fortunate or more efficient person.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya

$4.50-$5.00 per pound is market price for properly raised pasture based, Non-GMO birds across the country and most sell out before demand is met. Meat birds typically go 8 weeks, 3 in brooder and 5 on grass moving daily sometimes twice per day.

I think this particular farm might be catering to a smaller group of suckers and price gouging a bit.
Wwwweeeelllll, you might feel differently after raising and selling birds for a few years.

It's about 3.50-4.00 around here...large quantities might be less per bird. Can be more at a USDA processor than one that is not USDA certified. That certification is often needed if one is going to be selling to the general public.

I guess it is what price the market will bear. I am mainly interested in meat birds for personal consumption with maybe a few for close friends. You are probably right about feeling differently which is why if I do sell birds publicly in the future, it will be a decision based on my experience trying to feed myself.

There are places around here (within 90 minute drive) that will do them as low as $1.75/bird and another that charges $4/bird. I also found a few others that are in the $2-$2.50 range. This is from my initial research, I can probably talk to some local farmers and keep the cost to around $2/bird. If I like the whole process, I might get my own equipment if I decide to increase volume.

Ummm, I thought the title of the thread said it all "Chickenless in Pennsylvania", but I added my location to my profile as suggested.

Indeed it does, but good to have it show under your avatar for other threads.
My pasted blurb about 'where are you' should have been edited...Sorry ;)
