I have hens that are just starting to lay and hens that are a bit over 3 months old in the same coop.

Can I feed the younger hens the layer feed without harming them?

Everyone is welcome to give their opinion.

If there is a problem what should I look out for?

Thanks, Ron

The layer has extra calcium in it. The younger birds should not eat extra calcium as it can damage internal organs. Many people solve this dilemma by feeding them grower or starter/grower until the younger chickens are of laying age and offering extra calcium, usually oyster shells, as free choice, not mixed with their feed.

If they all eat the layer, you won't see any signs of problems initially. If the younger birds do develop internal organ damage, it will be gradual and you will probably never know they have problems. They will be unthrifty and may die unexpectedly but you will not know why unless you have the body examined.

People do it all the time. I don't know of any other option unless you want to keep them on the more expensive grower and feed oyster shells on the side.

Awesome! Thanks Ridgerunner.
One less thing to worry about
