You mentioned that most of her birds were mixes - I wonder if that has something to do with longevity too??? I've always heard (have no idea whether there's any fact to it or not) that mixed breed dogs were generally the healthiest dogs out there (if well cared for) because selective breeding almost always brings specific sets of health issues...

So maybe it's the same with chickens.

I would think so.... I used to show dogs and have purebreds.... they all had an issue somewhere along the line... I now have mutts and they seem to have less issues. Maybe that is true for the chickies as well.
