How can I tell how old my chickens are? When I got them they were pretty small but had their feather (except for the barred rock who had striped feathers and a bare butt).
Is there any way to tell if they are hens or roosters, other than crowing? I have 6 Rhode Island Reds, 7 Auracanas and one barred rock (who is alleged to be a rooster).

At about 8weeks they will have put on a shell of "hard" outer feathers.
Males will start to grow a bit larger and more erect at that time.
The wattles and combs on the male will normally become more pronounced, too.

But just wait and watch them, keeping in mind what Ive detailed above. It wont be long before you can sort them out.
