Chickens Allowed to Roam in Yard??

My silkies don't roam far. Generally they lay in the tall grass next to their coop all day. The 8 week old youngin's hop in and out of the coop as they please. No one leaves to roam thus far. I find them 10 feet away under the deck but they are always back in the coop around 7:30.

We have a run, so I don't get to let them out everyday. Only when I'm home and I don't plan on going anywhere. Too many cats stalk around here, and we're not fenced in yet.

Mine seem to love the neighbors yard.....I have an acre they can roam on and do as they please, but they always head to the neighbors

But that might have something to do with the fact the neighbors are always throwing bread and other treats out for them.

I was going to start free ranging soon, but lately I've noticed a fairly large cat hanging around my yard (5.5 acres) so I'm worried about letting them free range. Can the adult standards handle a cat? I am way too scared to let the banties out.

What I meant about the girls being in a small space over winter is that we only FR when we're home. When we're away the girls in their run. Since they don't like the rain, they hang out under the coop (2.5' x 7'). Since we're in Seattle, it rains a lot, so they'll be under the coop a lot.

Does anyone have any advice for keeping free-range chickens from destroying mulched beds? They are just dust bathing, but they are really messing things up.They scratch out all the mulch onto the grass.I guess a run is in order unless anyone has a better idea. Please, I need help and fast! I always thought this was why they called it chicken wire (plenty laid out flat around raspberry plants, here)
