Chickens and Cows

Your tractor will likely not last long in with the cows. They will rub on it and smash it up. Not being mean, they are just big and like to scratch.

I think this was Joel Saltin's method of pasture management... I'm pretty sure I read this in Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma. He used to have the chickens follow the cows through the pasture rotation to scratch through the poo and eat the fly larva. He had a mobile coop on a trailer (larger than a tractor, probably so the cows wouldn't smash it) that housed the chickens at night. I'm not a farm girl, but I know that the Gale Woods Farm here in Minnetrista houses their chickens with the cows. Everyone seems content when I see them.
