Chickens and fertilizer..??

My hubby wants to fertilize the yard. We let the chickens free range a few hours during the day....and obviously I don't want them eating the fertilizer. Any suggestions?...besides keeping them cooped up?

Guess you could do it right before a good rain. I just let my chickens do the fertilizing.
