It won’t hurt chickens if the get into the dog’s food one day, but it does not have the right nutrition to be their primary food source.

A little bit is fine. I put the leftover "dust" from my dog food into the chicken's bowls.

I’ll throw a handful of cat or dog food out occasionally to the flock as a treat/protein boost.

While I highly discourage the practice, Dottie -- a Prairie Bluebell Egger and now-grown-girl-who-needs-to-stay-outdoors -- likes nothing better than to run off the cat and eat his food. I keep telling her it's a bad idea, but she doesn't listen. I'm glad to hear that it doesn't seem to hurt her in small quantities, since I seem unable to stop her.
